Genevieve Sweeney Graduate Knitwear Collection

Genevieve Sweeney has been knitting since she was 5. Like many of us, she was taught by her Grandmother and then at 16, when she met someone studying the Fashion Knitwear course at Nottingham Trent, she realised she could make a living from what she considered to be a secret hobby (more on secret knitters in another article).

Genevieve graduated from NTU in 2011 with a First Class Honours in Fashion Knitwear. Her menswear collection ‘Shadow of a doubt’ was inspired by Hitchcock films. Her muse, the Hitchcock villain is ‘a Gentlemen who seem at first sophisticated and seductive yet hides wickedness within himself.’

“The use of dress alters what we first perceive of the character, the manipulation of appearance allows suspense. Clothing is a signifier, expressing the individual character; Hitchcock’s male character’s are dressed in strong power suits or hidden behind sunglasses. There is juxtaposition between reality and perception”, she says.

“Hitchcock uses scenes of train tracks as visual signs to illustrate the growing tension and dramatic thrill in the plot, I developed my concept by evoking the sense of dramatic tension through stitch and pattern, experimenting with colour balance throughout the collection to portrays drama and tension in gradients of tones. My Hitchcock muse is a modern ‘gentlemen’, I have incorporated sophisticated silhouettes and tailored styling to portray his sartorial style. Red is highlighted throughout the collection, developing in intensity to illustrate the wickedness of the villain being revealed."

The collection, which is knitted entirely in fine cashmere and wool, is rich, striking and classic in its design. Genevieve’s favourite pieces are the hand knitted, oversized cardigan and the cashmere cardigan with ‘coloured engineered lines, travelling up the garment’.

She specialized in menswear following her time in industry during her degree, she loved the colours and subtle details associated with menswear design and the challenge in presented. Though while she produced a menswear collection for her graduate show, Genevieve is now working on her own line that will incorporate womenswear too.

We’ll be keeping you up to date on the development of her new line and you can follow Genevieve on Twitter and Instagram to see how things are shaping up.

Genevieve’s graduate knitwear collection is now available to buy at WMJ, you can shop the collection here.
